SUMMARY:Dr. Aksana Ismailbekova & Dr. Frédérick Madore: Islam’s
 „Peripheries“: Digital Humanities\, Algorithmic Analysis\, and AI
in West Africa and Central Asia
UID:5420-2eea-39e8-6580@www.osteuropa.phil.fau.de
DESCRIPTION:The fifth seminar of the seminar series „Digital History
in/of Central Asia and the South Caucasus“ will be held on June 29
 \, 14:00 CEST | 16:00 Yerevan & Tbilisi | 17:00 Tashkent & Almaty | 1
8:00 Bishkek online in Zoom. Topic: Islam’s „Peripheries“: Digi
tal Humanities\, Algorithmic Analysis\, and AI in West Africa and Cent
ral Asia. Invited experts: Dr. Aksana Ismailbekova\, Leibniz-Zentrum
Moderner Orient\, Berlin & Dr. Frédérick Madore\, University of Bayr
euth. In Islamic studies\, sub-Saharan Africa and Central Asia are oft
en treated as marginal\, yet these regions may share underexplored par
allels around modernity\, governance\, secularism\, and Islamic intell
ectual production that this project seeks to examine. This presentatio
n introduces a new VolkswagenStiftung-funded project that will use AI
to unlock two unique multilingual collections at the Leibniz-Zentrum M
oderner Orient (ZMO): the Islam West Africa Collection (14\,500+ items
\, six countries\, 1960s–present) and the Reinhard Eisener Collectio
n (1\,546 documents on the Emirate of Bukhara\, early Soviet governanc
e\, and the Tajik civil war). Together\, these ~16\,000 documents in o
ver ten languages remain largely inaccessible due to their volume\, li
nguistic diversity\, and partial cataloguing. We outline three planned
approaches: (1) multimodal large language models for text extraction\
 , transcription\, metadata attribution\, and named entity extraction a
 cross low-resource languages and scripts\; (2) a cross-regional chatbo
t enabling semantic queries across both collections\; and (3) open-sou
 rce\, replicable AI-powered workflows with human-in-the-loop validatio
 n. The pipeline is designed to be modular and replicable for other mul
tilingual\, under-resourced archival collections. Language: English.

. The lecture is based on the practical experience of launching the Al
maty Museum of Arts and focuses on how digital technologies are integr

SkVB__FPTnedWLpt4KhNxA Abstract Over the past two decades\, Digital Hu
manities has become an established field within global humanities rese
arch\, bringing computational methods and digital tools into the study
of history\, culture\, and society. In Kyrgyzstan\, however\, the sys
tematic use of digital methods in the humanities is a relatively recen
t development. This presentation offers an overview of the current sta
te of Digital Humanities and digital history in Kyrgyzstan\, with part
icular attention to academic teaching\, research practices\, and insti
tutional initiatives. Drawing on experiences from the American Univers
ity of Central Asia (AUCA)\, the talk introduces the development of fo
rmal coursework in Digital Humanities\, including the country’s firs
t introductory course in the field and discusses how digital methods a
re integrated into disciplines such as history\, anthropology\, folklo
re studies\, and Manas studies. The presentation also highlights selec
ted projects\, including the digital analysis of contemporary Manas na
rratives\, digital mapping of historical and cultural heritage sites\,
and ongoing efforts to digitize manuscript and oral collections. By s
ituating these initiatives within broader international Digital Humani
ties debates\, the presentation reflects on conceptual challenges\, me

 /meeting/register/4NeC_Z0LSOqfwOIXibug5A Abstract This talk interrogat
es the transfer of digital history practices not as a neutral process
of methodological diffusion\, but as a politically and epistemically c
harged act. Taking the Russian context as a case\, it asks what – if
anything – can be productively borrowed from Russian digital archiv
es\, online museums\, and educational platforms\, and where such trans
fers risk reproducing hierarchical and colonial modes of knowledge pro
duction. Rather than treating digital tools as universally portable\,
the talk differentiates between technical infrastructures\, interface
design\, narrative regimes\, and institutional arrangements. It argues
that while certain technical solutions may be adaptable\, representat
ional logics and narrative authorities are deeply embedded in specific
historical\, political\, and imperial contexts. When detached from th
ese conditions\, they can silently reinscribe asymmetries of voice\, v
isibility\, and expertise. The talk identifies key sites where context
ual sensitivity becomes indispensable: the politics of source selectio
n\, visual grammars of legitimacy\, claims to archival completeness\,
and the institutional positioning of digital history projects. It conc
ludes by proposing a set of critical questions for reflexive reuse –
aimed at enabling translation without extraction\, and methodologica

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Olha Korniienko (ZZF Potsdam): Cold War Cultural Diplo
macy: Ukrainian Fashion on the Global Stage\, 1945–1991 This talk ex
amines how Ukrainian fashion functioned as a platform for cultural dip
lomacy and the articulation of national identity during the Cold War\,
focusing on the period from 1945 to 1991. It explores the contributio
ns of designers working in Soviet Ukraine alongside those of the Ukrai
nian diaspora in North America\, highlighting their efforts to promote
Ukrainian cultural heritage and elevate its global visibility despite
ideological and political constraints. As one of the Soviet Union’s
key fashion centers\, the Ukrainian SSR played a significant role in
shaping Soviet aesthetics while maintaining a distinct national charac
ter. Ukrainian designers participated in major international exhibitio
ns\, including Expo 1967 in Montreal\, where their work stood apart fr
om broader Soviet fashion trends. These events facilitated contact bet
ween Soviet Ukraine and the Ukrainian diaspora\, which increasingly us
ed fashion\, particularly clothing and public shows\, as a means of ad
vocating for an independent Ukraine\, prompting concern from Soviet au
thorities. Fashion shows in Montreal\, Los Angeles\, and other cities
thus became sites of both cultural exchange and subtle political resis
tance. By examining these intersecting initiatives\, this talk contrib
utes to broader discussions on Cold War cultural diplomacy\, Soviet na
tionality policies\, and global design history. It demonstrates how fa
shion served as both a tool of cultural preservation and a means of po
litical resistance on the international stage during a period of geopo
litical tension. Oberseminar im Sommersemester 2025.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Kateryna Yeremieieva (LMU München): Laughing Lenin\,
Satirizing Kotliarevsky\, and Stalin’s Mandatory Cheer: The Creation
of Soviet Humor in Ukraine during the 1920s and 1930s This presentati
on explores the construction of Soviet humor in Ukraine during the 192
0s and 1930s. This project was influenced not by a formal ban on laugh
ter\, but by a growing set of ideological\, aesthetic\, and emotional
norms that defined when\, how\, and why people could laugh. Humor was
expected to be politically loyal\, emotionally appropriate\, and refle
ctive of national identity\, embodying both the revolutionary spirit a
nd the cultural aspirations of Soviet Ukraine. Bolshevik cultural poli
cy aimed to turn laughter into a pedagogical and ideological tool. Aut
horitative figures played a crucial role in this process: Kotliarevsky
and Shevchenko helped establish a &#8222\;Soviet Ukrainian&#8220\; tr
adition of satire\; the image of a laughing Lenin suggested that humor
\, when properly channeled\, could align with revolutionary ideals\; a
nd later\, Stalin represented a shift towards “mandatory cheer\,”
where optimism was seen as a sign of political loyalty. The policy of
Ukrainization added complexity\, necessitating humour that was ideolog
ically Soviet but expressed in the Ukrainian language\, form\, and cul
tural references. At the heart of this discussion is Ostap Vyshnia\, k
nown as Ukraine’s “king of print runs.” His immensely popular us
mishky (short humorous pieces) illustrated how increasing control and
hyper-normativity established ever more stringent rules\, leading to w
hat this talk refers to as &#8222\;Humor Turbulence.&#8220\; This term
describes instances when laughter transcended official narratives\, h
ighlighting the vulnerabilities of a system that legitimized humor thr
ough &#8218\;the people\,&#8216\; the Party\, and revolutionary ideals
. Although the regime sought to suppress such turbulence\, its own dis

DESCRIPTION:Tetiana Pastuschenko: Ukrainische Kriegsgefangene: der Rah
Stattdessen i

SUMMARY:Fabian Baumann: Banal Nationalism\, Republican Pride\, and Sym

UID:7c53-cd9a-f5a1-5633@www.osteuropa.phil.fau.de
DESCRIPTION:Fabian Baumann: Banal Nationalism\, Republican Pride\, and
Symbolic Ethnicity in Late Soviet Ukraine While the Brezhnev period h
as traditionally been seen as a phase of de-nationalization in Ukraini
an\, this paper will argue that the late Soviet authorities in fact pr
opagated a new form of Ukrainian nationhood\, one based less on ethnoh
istorical commonalities than on territorial and institutional cohesion
. Combining Michael Billig’s notion of “banal nationalism” with
Alexei Yurchak’s analysis of “hypernormalized authoritative discou
rse\,” I will show that Soviet Ukrainian leaders reproduced the assu
mption of Ukrainian nationhood even as they deprived it of concrete po
litical and cultural content. While First Secretary Petro Shelest stil
l promoted ethnic history alongside pride in Ukraine’s republican qu
asi-statehood\, his successor Volodymyr Shcherbyts’kyi preferred an
image of Ukraine as a productive economic space free of ethnic specifi
city. Late Soviet Ukrainian banal nationalism left traces in everyday
life\, whether in sports reporting\, school curricula\, or the promoti
on of the Ukrainian language as a national symbol\, though not as a me
dium of communication. Not least\, it created a specific visual langua
ge combining institutional emblems with politically empty ethnic symbo
ls. During perestroika\, late Soviet banal nationalism was appropriate
 d and instrumentalized first by the national-democratic opposition\, a
nd later by “national communists.” By being attractive to those So
viet Ukrainians who were indifferent to the nationalist cultural canon
\, this semantically empty form of Ukrainianness contributed to the vi
ability of post-Soviet Ukrainian nationhood. Language: English. Regist
 ration. Oberseminar im Wintersemester 2024/25.

SUMMARY:Kateryna Burkush: Female Migrant Workers from Western Ukraine
 in the Late Soviet Village
UID:d605-ed97-0e33-5593@www.osteuropa.phil.fau.de
DESCRIPTION:Kateryna Burkush: Female Migrant Workers from Western Ukra
ine in the Late Soviet Village: Oral Histories of Gendered Life Course
s and Economic Change In the late Soviet Union\, hired labor at collec
tive farms became more common as the countryside struggled to retain a
sufficient workforce. Migrant workers were especially welcome during
peak seasons. This presentation explores the gendered dimension of sea
sonal labor migration by bringing forward the experiences of rural wom
en from Soviet western borderland\, Transcarpathia\, who were frequent
migrant agricultural workers. From the early 1950s\, short-term contr
acts in agriculture offered access to grain\, a commodity that was in
short or insufficient supply in some areas of Western Ukraine. This wa
s an important incentive for rural families that relied on private hou
sehold production for subsistence. By the 1970s\, cash payments increa
sed and added to the allure of seasonal work. Based on oral interviews
\, the presentation investigates women’s motivations to engage in se
asonal work throughout their life courses\, from adolescence to retire
ment\, and in the changing contexts of late socialism\, primarily the
gradual increase in local employment opportunities\, and the evolving
living standards and consumption desires. The event is held jointly wi
th DGO. Language: English. Registration. Oberseminar im Wintersemester

adopt a so-called “pluralistic model”\, although supporters of ot
her approaches exist as well. There are many perspectives on the Sovie

s in the politics of memory can be seen as a normal phenomenon. For a
multinational state like Kazakhstan\, such diversity can only be benef
icial. It is important for a stable socio-political situation in a mul
ticultural state with a diverse culture to recognize the existence of
different perspectives on the past\, particularly regarding the still
freshly remembered Soviet period. Respect and recognition of pers
